OIL establishing green hydrogen plant at Baddi

Shimla: The Oil India Limited (OIL) in collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) is establishing one megawatt (MW) – 400 kg per day – capacity green hydrogen plant at Baddi in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, informed Union minister of state for new and renewable energy and power Shripad Yesso Naik.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Naik said the central govt had not sanctioned any project under the National Green Hydrogen Mission in Himachal Pradesh till now. He, however, informed that the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) and OIL had independently undertaken initiatives for setting up green hydrogen projects in Himachal Pradesh. Naik was responding to a question by Sikander Kumar, Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh.

The SJVNL, last year, inaugurated India’s first multi-purpose (combined heat and power) green hydrogen pilot project at its 1,500 megawatt (MW) Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station at Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh.

The Himachal Pradesh govt has incorporated provisions in the Himachal Pradesh Energy Policy 2021 to promote green hydrogen energy storage, said Naik.

He informed that the Centre was implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an objective to make India a global hub of production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The Union cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission in Jan 2023 with an overall outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, said Naik.
