Brazil produced a record 36.83 billion liters (9.73 billion gallons) of ethanol in 2024, up 4.4% when compared to the previous year, according to data released by UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association.
Corn accounted for a record 7.7 billion liters of production last year, up 32.8% when compared to 2023. Most of the remaining 29.13 billion liters was produced from sugarcane feedstock. Brazil is the world’s second largest producer of ethanol, second only to the U.S.
UNICA estimates that the use of ethanol has offset more than 710 million tons of CO2 equivalent since the country first launched flex-fuel technology, which allows cars to run on any proportion of gas and/or ethanol. The group also estimates that ethanol has saved Brazil’s citizens approximately R$130 billion ($22.56 billion) since 2003.
