BSF apprehends 1 for sugar smuggling bid

Shillong: BSF, Meghalaya, on Saturday intercepted a vehicle, which was loaded with a huge quantity of sugar, near the India-Bangladesh border in the South Garo Hills district, while apprehending an Indian national in connection with the seizure.

"Acting on specific intelligence inputs, vigilant troops of the 144th BSF Battalion foiled a smuggling attempt and seized a sugar-laden vehicle.... The sugar was intended for smuggling across the border. During questioning, the driver failed to produce any valid documents for the consignment," a statement issued by BSF Meghalaya Frontier headquarters on Sunday said.

The seized goods, along with the apprehended individual, have been handed over to Baghmara police station for further investigation and necessary legal action, the BSF said.

Previously, on Thursday, the BSF thwarted a smuggling attempt near the international border in East Khasi Hills district. "Acting on intelligence inputs, BSF troops swiftly intercepted smugglers in the border area of Dulainala, seizing miscellaneous items and cattle worth more than Rs 27 lakh, which were intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh," a BSF release read.
