German cities’ 19 new hydrogen buses will require round trips of up to 89km or more to refuel

The neighbouring German cities of Essen and Mülheim will introduce 19 new hydrogen buses in the coming months, but they will each require a round-trip of at least 44km to be refuelled.

This is because the planned hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) at the Ruhrbahn bus depot in Essen will not be put into operation until the end of this year.

The nearest suitable HRSs are in Dusseldorf and Herten, which are 22-33km and 39-44.5km away from Rurhbahn’s depots in Essen and Mülheim, respectively, via the shortest routes. And slightly longer routes may actually be quicker for the bus drivers due to traffic.
