Govt launches action plan for environmentally friendly aviation fuel

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government launched an action plan for the development of environmentally friendly aviation fuels or Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) at the 2024 Bali International Airshow (BIAS).

"Today, we launch our development action plan for efficient sustainable fuels, as part of our commitment to achieving net zero emissions," Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, stated at the event in Badung, Bali, on Wednesday.

He noted that a meeting to discuss a roadmap for implementing SAF by exploring potential resources would be held later.

The minister highlighted that the potential resources are coconut oil, seaweed, and rice dregs.

"Shortly, we will conduct a meeting to discuss the roadmap. We would immediately see the execution, including listing the environmentally friendly resources for the aviation sector," Pandjaitan stated.

Furthermore, he would call on state-owned oil company Pertamina to collaborate with several airlines for further studies on using these resources.

"With our economy, which is now seen as very promising, with downstreaming, digitalization, electronic catalogs, and our abundant mineral resources, they see Indonesia as the center," he stated.

At the event, he also emphasized that such effort is a form of seriousness in protecting the future.

The plan to develop environmentally friendly aviation fuel is also one of the main dialogues in this aerospace exhibition attended by Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Tuesday (September 17).

In the panel, he highlighted that Indonesia's commitment to switching from fossil-based aviation fuel to environmentally friendly fuel is in line with the agenda of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that highlights the critical role of SAF and Low Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF) in reducing CO2 emissions.
