In the first five months of the 2024/25 marketing year (September-January), Ukraine exported more than 352,000 tons of sugar, which is 17% more than in the same period last season. The entire export volume was directed to markets outside the EU. In contrast, from September 2023 to January 2024, the share of exports to the global market, excluding the EU, was only 9.5%. A significant increase in global exports is the result of successful efforts by Ukrainian sugar producers to find alternative sales markets due to the restrictions imposed by the EU. Turkey (19% of all exports), Libya, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and North Macedonia were the main export destinations. This year from January to May, Ukrainians can export 107,300 tons of sugar to the EU. The Astarta agricultural holding, Ukraine’s largest sugar producer, supplied more than 1.2 million tons of farm products to global markets in 2024 (+18%). Sugar consumers include countries in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
