Kazakhstan to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in partnership with the ICAO: What you need to know more?

Kazakhstan has announced its commitment to producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as part of a new collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The announcement was made during ICAO Week in Kazakhstan at a regional seminar titled “Green Airports,” co-hosted by the ICAO European and North Atlantic Bureau and ACI EUROPE.

This significant event brought together key officials, including Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Transport Talgat Lastayev, ICAO European and North Atlantic Office Regional Director Nicolas Rallo, ACI Europe Director General Olivier Jankovec, and Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee Chairwoman Saltanat Tompiyeva.

Representatives from international aviation organizations, airports across Kazakhstan and Europe, and various airlines were also in attendance.

The ICAO Green Airports Regional Seminar provided an essential platform to discuss the development of low-carbon airports, focusing on the role of SAF and other sustainable energy sources in reducing aviation’s environmental footprint.

Vice Minister Lastayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s dedication to green aviation, stating, “Kazakhstan fully supports the ACI ‘Green Airports’ initiative to minimize aviation’s impact on the environment.

We are committed to ICAO’s goal of net-zero emissions from international flights by 2050 and are making steady progress to achieve this.”

Nicolas Rallo, Regional Director of the ICAO European and North Atlantic Office, emphasized the urgency of climate action: “Achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060 is a critical Sustainable Development Goal.

This ambitious target calls for immediate, coordinated action, particularly for landlocked nations where aviation plays a vital role.”

Kazakhstan’s commitment to SAF production and green aviation initiatives reflects its proactive stance in aligning with international environmental standards, positioning the country as a regional leader in sustainable aviation practices.
