Masdar Announces Partners for World’s First 24/7 Gigascale Renewable Energy Project

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), the UAE’s clean energy pioneer, has announced the preferred suppliers and contractors for the world’s first large-scale, 24/7 gigascale renewable energy project to be developed in Abu Dhabi.

The groundbreaking project, revealed during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), will integrate solar photovoltaic (PV) power with advanced battery storage technology to deliver uninterrupted renewable energy.

JA Solar and Jinko Solar, two global leaders in PV module manufacturing, along with CATL, the world’s largest battery producer, have been named as preferred suppliers. Meanwhile, Larsen & Toubro and Powerchina have been selected as preferred engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors.

The Letters of Award were signed during a special ceremony at the Masdar Pavilion at ADSW. Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Masdar’s Chief Operating Officer, signed on behalf of Masdar, with senior representatives from Powerchina and Larsen & Toubro also in attendance.

The project, developed in collaboration with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), will deliver up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable baseload power. It features a 5.2GW (DC) solar PV facility coupled with a 19-gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), making it the largest solar PV and BESS installation globally.

Milestone in Clean Energy Innovation

Abdulaziz Alobaidli commented:

“This record-breaking project with EWEC is a significant leap in the clean energy transition, addressing the intermittency challenges of renewables. It enables the dispatch of clean energy around the clock. By partnering with top-tier suppliers and contractors, we aim to set a new global benchmark in clean energy innovation.”

Jinko Solar and JA Solar will each supply 2.6GW of PV modules equipped with advanced TopCon technology for optimal efficiency and production over a 30-year lifespan. CATL will provide its state-of-the-art TENER battery technology for the 19GWh BESS, ensuring long-term reliability, high efficiency, and stability throughout the project’s lifetime.

Advancing UAE’s Energy Strategy

The project aligns with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and supports the commitments made under the UAE Consensus at COP28. By integrating large-scale solar and BESS technologies, the initiative ensures grid stability and energy reliability, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a global leader in sustainability and clean energy transformation.

Since its inception in 2006, Masdar has spearheaded clean energy projects in over 40 countries. The company is on track to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100GW and become a leading producer of green hydrogen by 2030.
